The purpose of a mission statement is to clarify and communicate what your business stands for. It states what you believe , and why. It should not be confused with a vision statement. A vision statement defines the future goals of the business. These goals can be updated and changed as your small business evolves. Your mission statement is who you are – it doesn’t change as the business grows.
A good mission statement comes from the heart
It becomes something you and your team can be passionate about. Here is the mission statement of The Business Therapist, Inc.:
“Re-energize the entrepreneurial spirit. Listen, coach, educate and facilitate the development of business owners toward their goals. Make a positive difference in their lives.”
If you are looking to motivate your employees, clarify and communicate what your central purpose is.
At the Business Therapist Inc. our central purpose is:
“To help business owners achieve health and wealth in their business and personal life. With more “cash, freedom and happiness” in the owners’ life, the lives of their families, team members and their communities will also improve.”
When you define your core values, you also imply what values are not acceptable to you. Although you may not realize it, your values are already being communicated. Employees make decisions every day based on their own values. We have included “practice what we preach” right in our statement of core values.
The Business Therapist Inc. core values are:
“We value honesty, integrity and mutual respect. Our families, communities and natural environment are a priority. We appreciate every moment on this earth and live in a world of abundance. We will always practice what we preach and confidently be a model for others to follow.”
As business owners we have an opportunity to make a significant contribution. Even governments are realizing more and more that small business really is the backbone of the economy. It’s time to step up and conduct your business passionately and in alignment with your mission statement, core purpose core values.
